On April 22nd, a new event took place on the campus: the Microbiology Competition.
In the laboratory, there were a total of 4 stations with various tasks awaiting us, testing our theoretical knowledge and practical skills acquired during previous studies. We could spend a maximum of 8 minutes at each station.
The first station tested our mathematical abilities in counting yeast cells in a Bürker chamber. Locating the grooves of Bürker squares correctly can sometimes be difficult, so we appreciated the organizers' helpfulness in assisting us with their identification.
At the second task, we encountered a microscopic slide with an unknown microorganism. We thoroughly examined the mysterious microbe and, based on our observations, described, characterized, and classified it.
The third station featured a biochemical test based on the different enzymatic equipment of agents. By reading this test and consulting a microbe identification table, we successfully identified the microbe. For many, encountering this test was entirely new, but thanks to clear instructions, we all managed it with ease.
The fourth station presented short texts discussing the typical characteristics and properties of microorganisms. Based on these texts, we determined which microorganism matched the given characteristic. Thematic pictures were also provided to assist us in identification if needed.
We all thoroughly enjoyed the competition. We appreciated the friendly approach of the organizers, the diversity and creativity of the tasks, the manageable time frame, and the beautiful prizes that were truly worth participating in the competition for.
The entire program was a fantastic experience, and we would be delighted if this event became an annual tradition.
