Lecture on canistherapy

13/11/2024

The Czech Pharmacy Students' Association hosted a lecture on canistherapy, also known as animal-assisted therapy, in a classroom at Zámostí, led by Mrs. Bc. Jana Štepánková, DiS. She was accompanied by Olaf, a four-year-old assistance dog, belonging to the flat-coated retriever breed, who instantly caught everyone's attention with his calm and friendly nature.

Mrs. Štépánková shared her various and extensive experience in the field of canistherapy with us. We learned about the training of dogs for this demanding job, as well as specific stories from her practice, that displayed the crucial impact canistherapy can have on patients.

An especially interesting part of the lecture was the story of Olaf's journey to the University Hospital (Fakultní nemocnice) in Hradec Králové, where he is now a part of the staff. We had the chance to see demonstrations of his abilities and learn how important his skills and the bond he forms with patients truly are.

The lecture was not only informative, but also moving. It showed us the great importance of canistherapy in treating psychological and physical issues. Both Olaf and Mrs. Štěpánková left a strong impression on us, and if an opportunity to meet again comes up, I would for sure not miss it. This experience was a valuable linking of theory and practice, and a reminder of the amazing role dogs play in our lives.
